Shell Puget Sound Refinery Adopt A Family

PSR Adopt-a-Family is an ‘employee owned’ fundraising program that began in 1981. Each year the team does a variety of fundraising events to raise money for the program. In addition, the team also raises money through the Healthier Vending NW community partnership.

Shell Anacortes Refinery’s Adopt-a-Family program really began as a Christmas canned food drive in 1981 when Janet Foss Rosenberger asked Tom Montgomery if the Union Employees would join forces to increase the potential donations. They accepted the invitation and the drive was on! Then the next year, they put their heads together to see if they could come up with a program that would generate a bigger interest to the employees. They said, “Let’s adopt a family or two and make their Christmas special.”

The program has changed and evolved over in its 38 years, thanks to all their employees and contractors. Each year, families in need are assisted throughout Skagit Valley and Island County with the help of local Headstart programs, which is a preschool program for low-income families. The staff works closely with the families so they are a good resource for knowing a family’s situation and needs. For the last few years, the team has adopted the pre-school instead of the families directly, and this way, all of the children receive gifts, books, clothing, snacks and educational tools.
